Alaska summit announced: what was known by 11 August 2025

A look back at the Alaska meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, announced on 10 August 2025 and held on 15 August.

What did the world know about the planned Alaska summit on 11 August 2025? The outline was short but significant. On 10 August 2025, U.S. president Donald Trump announced that he would meet Russian president Vladimir Putin in Alaska, United States, on 15 August to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

The announcement placed the two leaders at one table for talks on the war, a subject on which the positions of Moscow and Kyiv remained far apart. Putin sought recognition of all occupied land as Russian, Russia's control of the regions it claims but does not fully occupy, guarantees that Ukraine would never join NATO, a curtailment of Ukraine's military, and the lifting of sanctions on Russia. Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought a ceasefire, a full withdrawal of Russian troops, the return of prisoners and kidnapped Ukrainian children, prosecution of Russian leaders for war crimes, and security guarantees against further aggression.

What followed

The summit took place, as announced, on 15 August 2025 at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. The main topic was the war in Ukraine. It ended without an agreement being announced. Trump later suggested that, in his view, the onus was now on Ukraine to cede territory in order to end the war.

On 11 August 2025, none of that was settled. What existed was a date, a location and a stated purpose: a meeting four days away between the presidents of the United States and Russia, with the end of the war on the agenda.
