A look back at the claim by a presidential advisor on 28 July 2022 that Ukraine had started to retake Kherson Oblast, and at a separate statement from Transnistria days earlier.

What did Ukraine's leadership say about the south on 28 July 2022? Presidential advisor Oleksiy Arestovych stated that an operation to recapture Kherson Oblast had started. The statement was reported as part of Ukraine's summer counteroffensive during the 2022 Russian invasion.

The reports of that day give no further detail on the operation's scope, timing or results, and the claim stands as the advisor's own announcement.

A statement from Transnistria

Six days earlier, on 22 July 2022, Transnistrian Foreign Minister Vitaly Ignatyev reaffirmed that Transnistria was committed to becoming an independent state. He added that it was open to the possibility of uniting with Russia in the future.
