Blackouts after the Christmas Day strikes on Ukraine's energy grid
A look back at the aftermath of Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure that were reported on 25 December 2024.

What did Ukraine's energy system look like on 27 December 2024, two days after a wave of Russian strikes on it? The attacks, reported on 25 December, left the country dealing with emergency blackouts in cities across Ukraine.
As reported at the time, Russian ballistic missiles and drones hit critical energy infrastructure in several cities. At least two people were killed and 20 others injured. The damage caused widespread emergency power cuts.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin over the strikes, calling the attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure "inhumane".
The attacks formed part of a pattern of winter strikes on electricity and district heating during the Russo-Ukrainian war, which caused recurring crises for energy supply in Ukraine.
