Ex-Supreme Court head Kniaziev sentenced to five years in bribery case
A plea deal ended the bribery case against the former head of Ukraine's Supreme Court, as diplomacy and the war continued around it.

What became of the bribery case against Vsevolod Kniaziev, the former head of the Supreme Court? On 8 June 2026 he was sentenced to five years in prison after reaching a plea agreement, admitting guilt on a bribery charge.
The sentence closed a case involving the country's most senior judicial post, and it was delivered by agreement rather than after a contested trial.
The wider backdrop
The sentencing came days after developments in diplomacy and the war. On 5 June 2026, Russian president Vladimir Putin rejected a proposal from Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a face-to-face meeting. Putin said he saw no point in it, and that the only point would be for the Ukrainian side to halt the advance of Russian armed forces.
On 3 June 2026, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian drones had struck an oil terminal in Saint Petersburg, while an economic forum was due to be held in the city, as well as military facilities at a naval base in Kronstadt.
On European integration, Politico reported on 2 June 2026 that Hungary would drop its opposition to Ukraine joining the European Union ahead of the upcoming EU conference in Luxembourg. Hungary had previously blocked the move under former prime minister Viktor Orbán.
