F-16s and a pipeline row: Kyiv's diplomacy on 6 August 2024

Two reports from the days before 6 August 2024 show Ukraine receiving new military hardware while facing pressure from a neighbour over energy.

What was shaping Ukraine's relations with its partners and neighbours on 6 August 2024? Two developments from the preceding days framed the picture: new military aid from allies and a dispute over oil transit with Slovakia.

On 4 August 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine had received its first F-16 fighter aircraft from NATO allies. The announcement came under the heading of military aid during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

A few days earlier, on 31 July 2024, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico threatened to suspend Slovakia's diesel exports to Ukraine. His condition was tied to the Ukrainian government's continued suspension of pipeline oil transport from the Russian oil company Lukoil. Slovakia claimed the suspension was causing a national energy crisis.

Together, the two reports showed Kyiv receiving long-awaited military support from NATO allies while also facing a threat of reduced fuel supplies from a neighbouring country over the Lukoil transit question.
