A retrospective on the shooting of the former speaker of parliament and the first steps of the investigation.

What did Ukraine know on 4 September 2025 about the killing of Andriy Parubiy? The picture was already clear in its basic outline, even as the political shock of the attack lingered.

On 30 August 2025, Parubiy, a serving member of parliament and former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, was shot dead in Lviv. He was 54. The attack took place at around 10:35 am local time on Yefremov Street. As reported at the time, the gunman was unknown, and a manhunt for the suspect was under way in Lviv Oblast.

That search moved quickly. By 1 September a suspect had been arrested in Khmelnytskyi Oblast, two days after the shooting. By 4 September, then, the first phase of the case, from the attack to an arrest, was complete.

The killing of a sitting lawmaker who had previously led parliament was a significant event for public life in Ukraine. It took place in Lviv, far from the front line, in daylight and on a city street. Further details of the investigation lay ahead of that date and are not covered here.
