How Kyiv reacted to the Florida shooting suspect's Ukraine links

Posted: | Filed under: Opinion | by Borderland staff

A look back at 16 September 2024, when Ukrainian officials distanced themselves from the suspect, and at a Polish-Ukrainian call on draft evasion.

What did Kyiv make of a shooting suspect who had campaigned for Ukraine's cause? On 16 September 2024, Ukrainian officials publicly distanced themselves from the suspect in the Donald Trump-related shooting and warned that Russia would use the situation for anti-Ukraine propaganda.

The warning followed reports that the suspect had protested in support of the Azov Brigade and regularly called for international support and troops for Ukraine. The incident itself had taken place the previous day, 15 September 2024. The suspect, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, a roofer and Russo-Ukrainian war activist, was reported to have attempted to kill Trump, then a former US president and the Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election, while Trump was golfing at his club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

A separate dispute over draft evasion

Two days earlier, on 14 September 2024, another issue had surfaced in Ukraine's foreign relations. After a meeting in Kyiv, the foreign ministers of Poland and Ukraine called for an end to social benefits for Ukrainian men in Poland. They also called for programmes in the European Union to return such men to Ukraine, with the aim of stopping draft evasion.

Together, the two items showed Ukraine's diplomats managing the country's image abroad while also addressing the pressures of conscription during the war.
