How Lithuania and Europe reacted to Russia's mobilisation order

Posted: | Filed under: Politics | by Borderland staff

A look back at the days after Moscow announced a partial mobilisation, and the first regional response.

What had changed in the region by 24 September 2022? Three days earlier, on 21 September 2022, Russian president Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilisation in a major address to the nation. The exceptions he named were students and conscripts.

The announcement drew a response from Russia's neighbours almost at once. Also on 21 September 2022, Lithuania placed its rapid reaction force on high alert. According to Defence Minister Arvydas Anušauskas, the step was taken in response to Russia's mobilisation.

Those two developments framed the situation as of 24 September 2022: a declared partial mobilisation in Russia, part of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, and a precautionary military posture in Lithuania, one of Russia's neighbours.
