A look back at the day the United States and Ukraine announced they would seek a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, after talks in Saudi Arabia.

What did Kyiv and Washington agree in Saudi Arabia? On 11 March 2025, the United States and Ukraine announced their intention to seek a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, following talks in Jeddah.

The U.S. delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Ukraine was represented by Andriy Yermak, the presidential chief of staff. The announcement came out of those discussions and set out a shared aim of pursuing a temporary halt to fighting with Russia.

Military aid continued in parallel

Two days earlier, on 9 March 2025, French Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu said France would use €195 million in interest from Russian assets to fund a military aid package for Ukraine.

Together, the two developments showed diplomacy and military support moving on separate tracks in the days before 11 March 2025.
