A look back at 28 July 2022, when a Ukrainian presidential adviser said an effort to retake Kherson Oblast had begun.

What did Ukraine say about its plans for the south on 28 July 2022? On that date, presidential advisor Oleksiy Arestovych said that an operation to recapture Kherson Oblast had started. The announcement was part of what became known as the 2022 Ukrainian summer counteroffensive, during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The statement came from an adviser to the president, and it placed the Kherson region at the centre of Ukraine's military effort that summer.

A separate regional development had been reported a few days earlier. On 22 July 2022, Transnistrian Foreign Minister Vitaly Ignatyev reaffirmed that Transnistria was committed to becoming an independent state. He added that it was open to the possibility of uniting with Russia in the future.
