A look back at the diplomatic reaction to the 11 November 2018 votes in the self-proclaimed DNR and LNR, and at a parliamentary resolution days earlier.

What did Ukraine and its partners make of the votes held in the self-proclaimed DNR and LNR? On 12 November 2018, the day after those ballots, the reaction was already clear: they were not accepted.

As reported at the time, the European Union, the United States and Japan said that holding the elections violated the Minsk agreements. Germany and France regarded the votes as illegal. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry stressed that Kyiv would not recognise the elections.

Parliament's resolution days earlier

On 8 November 2018, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution marking, at state level, the 75th anniversary of the start of the deportation of Ukrainians from Poland. The deportations took place in 1944–1951.
