Kyiv's busy late August of 2021: visitors, honours and e-passports
A look back at the days around 25 August 2021, when high-level visits and new rules on e-passports shaped public life in the Ukrainian capital.

What was happening in Kyiv on 25 August 2021, and what had led up to it? The days just before that date were crowded with diplomacy, ceremony and a change in the rules on identity documents.
On 21 August, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew arrived in the Ukrainian capital for a three-day visit. During it he met President Volodymyr Zelensky. The same day brought a first for the country: the presidential distinction "National Legend of Ukraine" was awarded for the first time.
On 22 August, German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Kyiv, and she too held a meeting with President Zelensky. Her talks came a day after the Patriarch's visit began, so for a short period the capital hosted two prominent foreign guests in quick succession.
The following day, 23 August, amendments to the legislation on e-passports took effect. The change was less visible than the motorcades and ceremonies, but it concerned the everyday paperwork of citizens.
Taken together, the sequence shows a capital where symbolic events, international contacts and administrative reform ran side by side in the closing days of that August. By 25 August 2021, the visits and the first presentation of the new presidential distinction had already taken place, while the updated e-passport rules had been in force for two days.
