Kyiv's parliament renames Volodymyr-Volynskyi as Volodymyr

A look back at the Verkhovna Rada's renaming decision and a dismissal at the Interior Ministry in mid-December 2021.

What did Ukraine's parliament change on 15 December 2021? The Verkhovna Rada renamed the city of Volodymyr-Volynskyi, which became simply Volodymyr.

The decision was a change to the name of a single city, and it was taken by the national legislature. Nothing more about its reasons or consequences was reported at the time, so it is best read as a narrow act of renaming.

Two days earlier, on 13 December 2021, a separate personnel change drew attention in the executive branch. Oleksandr Hohilashvili, a deputy minister of internal affairs, was dismissed after a series of high-profile scandals.

The two events were unrelated in subject: one concerned the naming of a city, the other the departure of a senior official from the Interior Ministry. Together they show the range of public business in the same week, from parliamentary decisions on place names to accountability questions inside a government ministry.
