Kyiv's white crosses: remembering Ilovaisk in August 2018
A retrospective on how Kyiv marked the memory of Ilovaisk victims in the final week of August 2018.

What did remembrance look like in Kyiv on 30 August 2018? The day came a few days after the capital had marked Independence Day, and one image from the days around it stood out: 366 white crosses placed outside the embassy of the Russian Federation.
As reported at the time, the crosses were installed on 29 August 2018 in memory of the victims of the Ilovaisk tragedy. The number of crosses corresponded to the number of victims being commemorated, and the location was deliberate: the embassy building in Kyiv.
A week of public symbolism
The installation followed the military parade held in Kyiv on 24 August 2018 for Independence Day. Within a single week, the capital hosted a state display of military strength and a quieter, civic act of mourning.
Taken together, the two events show how public space in Kyiv was used in late August 2018: for official ceremony on one side, and for commemoration of the dead on the other. The crosses were a simple, visible reminder of the human cost behind the Ilovaisk tragedy, placed where it would be seen.
