A look back at the investigation into the killing of the former parliament speaker, two days after the attack in Lviv.

What was known about the killing of Andriy Parubiy by 1 September 2025? The former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, who was serving as a member of parliament, had been shot dead in Lviv on 30 August 2025. He was 54.

As reported at the time, an unknown gunman carried out the attack, and a manhunt for the suspect was under way. The shooting took place at around 10:35 am local time on Yefremov Street in Lviv.

By 1 September, the search had produced a result: a suspect had been arrested in Khmelnytskyi Oblast. The detention came two days after the killing, closing the first phase of the manhunt.

Parubiy was a sitting member of parliament and a former chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, which made the shooting a significant event in Ukrainian public life. The reports from the period concentrated on the attack itself and the pursuit of the person believed to be responsible.

The arrest in Khmelnytskyi Oblast marked the point at which the case moved from a search for an unidentified attacker to the stage of dealing with a detained suspect.
