Poland's EU veto warning and a 90-day extension of martial law

A look back at two developments that shaped Ukraine's political agenda in the days around 24 July 2024.

What did Kyiv's political calendar look like on 24 July 2024? Two reports from that day and the one before it gave an answer: one about Ukraine's path to the European Union, the other about its wartime governance.

On 24 July 2024, Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Poland would block Ukraine's bid to join the European Union unless Kyiv resolved issues linked to the massacre of Poles by Ukrainian nationalists during the Second World War. He said this included finding and burying all victims killed on what is now Ukrainian territory.

A day earlier, on 23 July 2024, the Ukrainian parliament had agreed to extend martial law and nationwide military mobilisation for a further 90 days, starting on 12 August.

Taken together, the two reports show a government managing the demands of war at home while facing conditions from a neighbouring state over its European ambitions.
