Renaming Kirovohrad region: what the Rada decided in 2018
A look back at the parliamentary vote of 20 November 2018 on the region's name, and at the events around it.

What did Ukraine's parliament actually settle on 20 November 2018? The Verkhovna Rada adopted a decision to rename Kirovohrad region as Kropyvnytskyi region, and sent the bill to the Constitutional Court.
The second step matters for reading the vote. The decision was not the end of the process: the legislation went to the Constitutional Court, so the renaming was still awaiting a further stage when the day ended.
A busy few days
The vote came amid other news. On 18 November 2018, a planned transgender rights rally in Kyiv was attacked by far-right radicals. On 19 November 2018, the 930-kilometre offshore section of the TurkStream gas pipeline between Russia and Turkey was completed. The reports do not link these events to the Rada's decision, and they should not be read as connected.
What the day shows
The renaming vote showed parliament passing a decision on a regional name while routing the matter through the constitutional review. Whether and when that review concluded lay beyond 20 November 2018, and nothing reported on that date settled it. The episode is a reminder that a headline vote in the Rada can mark only one stage in a longer legal path.
