Sakharov Prize and Sydney medals: Ukraine's late-October 2018 honours

A look back at two recognitions that reached Ukrainians in the final week of October 2018.

What did Ukraine's public life look like on 31 October 2018? Two recent recognitions stood out in the days leading up to that date, one political and one sporting.

On 25 October 2018, Oleg Sentsov was awarded the European Parliament's Andrei Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. The prize marked a distinction for Sentsov at the European level.

Two days later, on 27 October 2018, Ukrainian competitors finished the Invictus Games in Sydney with 20 medals: seven gold, ten silver and three bronze.

Taken together, the two announcements gave the end of October 2018 a distinctly international profile for Ukrainians, with recognition coming from a European institution and from athletes competing in Australia.
