Sandu's first foreign trip as president brought her to Kyiv
A look back at the Moldovan president's visit to Ukraine and the US sanctions announced a day earlier.

What did Moldova's new president choose as her first foreign destination? On 12 January 2021, Maia Sandu arrived in Ukraine on her first foreign visit as president.
As reported at the time, both countries said they were willing to join the Three Seas Initiative and the European Union.
Sanctions announced the day before
The visit came a day after the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on seven Ukrainian politicians, among them Oleksandr Dubinsky, Kostiantyn Kulyk and Oleksandr Onyshchenko. Four media outlets were also targeted: Era-Media, Only News, NabuLeaks and Skeptik. The measures were imposed over interference in the US presidential election and participation in a Russian foreign influence network.
