Slovakia's Fico signals end to military aid for Ukraine

A look back at the Slovak announcement, reported on 26 October 2023, that shifted Bratislava's support towards humanitarian help.

What did it mean when a neighbour of Ukraine said its military aid was ending? On 27 October 2023, that question hung over reactions to the Russian invasion, a day after Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced the cessation of military aid to Ukraine.

According to the report dated 26 October 2023, Fico stressed humanitarian support instead. The announcement placed Slovakia–Ukraine relations at the centre of the continuing debate over how countries should respond to the war.

The wider setting was already vast. Russia had invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, escalating the Russo-Ukrainian War that began in 2014. The invasion caused Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II, with more than 8.2 million Ukrainians fleeing the country and a third of the population displaced. It also caused global food shortages.

Reactions to the invasion have varied considerably, across public opinion, media responses and peace efforts. Slovakia's move, as reported at the time, was one expression of that range: a halt to military assistance, paired with an emphasis on humanitarian aid.
