Slovakia's pledge to halt military aid to Ukraine
A look back at the stance Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced in late October 2023, and what it meant for Kyiv's partnerships.

What did it mean when a neighbouring government said it would stop sending weapons to Ukraine? On 30 October 2023, that question was live in Kyiv, four days after Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced the cessation of military aid to Ukraine on 26 October 2023.
The announcement placed Slovakia–Ukraine relations under new scrutiny. Fico stressed that Slovakia would instead concentrate on humanitarian support, shifting the emphasis of Bratislava's assistance away from military supplies.
The decision was one of many reactions to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February 2022 as a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War that started in 2014. Responses abroad have varied considerably, spanning public opinion, media coverage and peace efforts.
The human stakes of the war remained large. The invasion caused Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II, with more than 8.2 million Ukrainians fleeing the country and a third of the population displaced. It also contributed to global food shortages.
Against that backdrop, the Slovak position showed how support for Ukraine could be divided between military and humanitarian help, a distinction Fico made explicit in his announcement.
