Staromaryivka and a new Supreme Court head: Ukraine in late October 2021

A look back at what was reported around 28 October 2021 on the Donbas front line and in Ukraine's judiciary.

What was happening in Ukrainian public life on 28 October 2021? Two reports from the preceding days set the picture: one from the front line in Donbas, the other from the country's top court.

On 27 October 2021, Ukrainian troops were reported to have regained control of the village of Staromaryivka, in the so-called "grey zone" between Ukraine and the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). The report came from Natalya Nikonorova, whom it identified as the DPR's foreign minister, so it reflected the account of one side in the conflict.

A few days earlier, on 22 October 2021, Vsevolod Kniazev was elected head of the Supreme Court of Ukraine.

The two developments were unrelated, but together they show the range of public affairs in Ukraine in that period: a contested stretch of territory in the east and a leadership appointment in the judicial system.
