Three days after Parubiy's killing in Lviv: what was known

Posted: | Filed under: Politics | by Borderland staff

A look back at the state of the case on 3 September 2025, after the shooting of a sitting MP and former parliamentary speaker.

What was known on 3 September 2025 about the killing of Andriy Parubiy? The basic facts had been established three days earlier. On 30 August 2025, Parubiy, a sitting member of parliament and former chair of the Verkhovna Rada, was shot dead in Lviv. He was 54.

As reported at the time, the attacker was an unknown gunman, and a manhunt was under way for the suspect. The shooting took place at around 10:35 am local time on Yefremov Street in the city.

The suspect

By 1 September, a suspect had been arrested in Khmelnytskyi Oblast. That was two days after the shooting, and so by 3 September the search for the gunman had already given way to an arrest.

A public figure

Parubiy had held one of the country's senior parliamentary posts as speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, and he was still serving as a people's deputy when he was killed. The attack on a figure of that standing, in a city far from the front line, made the case a matter of national attention.

The events of 30 August and 1 September are the ones that can be firmly stated about the case as of 3 September 2025: the place, the approximate time, the victim's offices, and the arrest of a suspect in a neighbouring region.
