A look back at the withdrawals that reshaped the field of candidates ahead of the presidential election, as of 5 March 2019.

What did the presidential race look like on 5 March 2019? It had just lost two names. Reports dated 1 March 2019 said that candidates Andriy Sadovyi and Dmytro Hnap had decided to withdraw from the election in favour of Anatolii Hrytsenko.

The decision meant that neither man would remain on the ballot as a separate contender, and that Hrytsenko was named as the candidate they chose to support. The reports gave no further detail about the terms of the arrangements.

The announcements came in the closing stretch of the campaign for the election of the President of Ukraine, when the question of how many candidates would split the vote was one that voters and rivals were watching.

Elsewhere in Ukrainian public life, there was separate news from 27 February 2019. The national Paralympic team for winter sports finished first overall at the 2019 World Championships in Prince George, Canada, with 42 medals: nine gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze.
