Two February 2021 decisions that shaped Ukraine's public debate

A look back at a court verdict in Odesa and a sanctions decision on terrorism financing, reported in the days before 25 February 2021.

What did Ukraine's public agenda look like on 25 February 2021? Two reported decisions from the preceding days framed much of it, one from a court and one from the security council.

On 19 February 2021, the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine backed sanctions against 19 legal entities and eight individuals over the financing of terrorism. Viktor Medvedchuk and Oksana Marchenko were among those named.

On 23 February 2021, the Prymorskyi District Court of Odesa sentenced activist Serhiy Sternenko to seven years and three months in prison, with confiscation of half of his property.

The two decisions came from different institutions and concerned different matters. Both were part of the news by 25 February 2021, and both involved named public figures. This review notes them as a snapshot of that moment, without drawing links between them that the reports of the time did not make.
