Two shocks in four days: Kyiv fire and Poland's Article 4 call

Posted: | Filed under: Politics | by Borderland staff

A look back at how a strike on Kyiv's government quarter and a drone incursion into Poland framed the days around 11 September 2025.

What did the news look like on 11 September 2025, a day after a NATO member formally turned to its allies over Russian drones? The reports from the days around it point to two events that framed the moment.

On 7 September, the building of the Cabinet of Ministers in Kyiv was set on fire after a Russian strike. The attack hit the seat of Ukraine's executive power in the capital.

Three days later, on 10 September, Polish prime minister Donald Tusk invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty following a Russian drone incursion into Poland. The incident was recorded among violations of non-combatant airspaces during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and it placed Poland-Russia and Russia-NATO relations at the centre of attention.

By 11 September 2025, the two events were part of the same picture: the war was reaching the heart of Ukraine's government in Kyiv, and a neighbouring allied state was asking for consultations under the alliance's founding treaty.
