A look back at a parliamentary vote on renaming a region, and at an attack on a rally in Kyiv two days earlier.

What happened in Ukrainian public life on 20 November 2018? In the Verkhovna Rada, the parliament of Ukraine, deputies adopted a decision to rename Kirovohrad Oblast as Kropyvnytskyi Oblast. The legislature then sent the bill to the Constitutional Court.

The step came as part of the formal process for changing the region's name, which involved the court's review of the bill after the parliamentary vote.

An attack in Kyiv two days earlier

The same week was also marked by an incident on the streets of the capital. On 18 November 2018, a planned transgender rights rally in Kyiv was attacked by far-right radicals, as reported at the time.

Together, the two events showed different sides of public life in Ukraine: a formal legislative procedure carried out in parliament, and a public gathering in Kyiv that was disrupted by an attack.
