Two Ukrainian stories from August 2021: a polar ship and an evacuee

A look back at how a research vessel purchase and an evacuation to Kyiv marked the same week in Ukraine.

What did Ukraine's public life look like on 19 August 2021? Two developments, though unrelated, showed the country acting beyond its borders.

On 19 August 2021, Ukraine bought the research icebreaker vessel James Clark Ross from Great Britain for its National Antarctic Scientific Center. The purchase concerned the country's polar research ambitions and gave the centre a ship of its own.

Two days earlier, on 17 August 2021, Sahraa Karimi was evacuated from Afghanistan to Kyiv after the Taliban took Kabul. She is a well-known Afghan film director and was general director of the state film company Afghanfilm.

Two different kinds of reach

The two events differ in scale and in kind. One was a state acquisition meant to serve science, the other a rescue of a cultural figure from a collapsing government in Kabul. Both placed Ukraine in an international role: as a buyer of scientific equipment from a partner state, and as a place of refuge. Kyiv received an Afghan filmmaker at a moment when her institution and her country's authorities had been overturned.
