Ukraine's Christmas date change and what it signalled

Posted: | Filed under: Politics | by Borderland staff

A look back at the law signed on 28 July 2023 that moved Christmas from 7 January to 25 December.

What did it mean when Ukraine moved Christmas? On 1 August 2023, the change was the most recent step in a legislative decision signed days earlier, on 28 July 2023, by President Zelensky.

The bill, passed by parliament, amended the Labour Code to shift the celebration of Christmas in Ukraine from 7 January to 25 December. It also covered other state holidays whose dates are tied to religious observances. The stated aim was to abandon the Russian legacy of imposing Christmas celebrations.

A question of framing

The purpose was set out in explicitly political terms. The measure was presented not as a change to the calendar alone, but as a step away from a Russian inheritance in public life. That places it among the decisions of the period that treat the state calendar as part of national policy.

The law's practical effect was to change the dates of official days off in the Labour Code. How it would be received in practice was not yet clear on 1 August 2023.
