Ukraine's law making English a language of international communication

Posted: | Filed under: Politics | by Borderland staff

A look back at the law signed on 27 June 2024, and at the arrest warrants issued two days earlier.

What did Ukraine decide about English on 27 June 2024? On that date, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law establishing English as an official language of international communication in Ukraine.

The law was described in reports at the time in those terms: English was given a defined role in the country's international communication.

A related development two days earlier

On 25 June 2024, the International Criminal Court, in its investigation in Ukraine, issued arrest warrants for Valery Gerasimov, Russia's Chief of the General Staff, and Sergei Shoigu, the former defence minister of Russia.

The two developments came within days of each other: one concerned the language of Ukraine's international communication, the other the court's investigation in Ukraine.
