Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences picks a new president

Posted: | Filed under: Politics | by Borderland staff

A look back at the leadership change at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, reported in the days before 8 October 2020.

Who was leading Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences as of 8 October 2020? By then the answer had changed: on 7 October 2020 the academy had elected a new president.

The post went to Anatolii Zahorodnii, professor and director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics. His election, reported on 7 October, made him the new head of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

A wider European backdrop

Beyond Ukraine, European politics had been busy in the days before. On 2 October 2020, the European Council agreed on sanctions against Belarus. Opposition from Cyprus was lifted when the Council also agreed on a warning to Turkey.

The reports from these days thus combine a domestic institutional change in Ukraine with a decision on sanctions in the European Union.
