Ukraine's Nations League demotion: a forfeit decided off the pitch
A look back at how a match never played with Switzerland shaped Ukraine's standing in UEFA's Nations League.

What happened to a football match that was never played? On 30 November 2020, the answer was still settling in for Ukraine's national team, days after a ruling from European football's governing body.
The match in question was the Nations League fixture against Switzerland, which was due on 17 November. On 25 November 2020, UEFA's appeals committee awarded Ukraine a technical defeat in that game. As a consequence, Ukraine would play in Division B in the following season of the 2020–2021 competition.
The outcome was therefore settled by a committee decision rather than by anything on the pitch. A fixture that had been scheduled for 17 November produced a forfeit, and the forfeit determined the team's league placement.
A crowded news week
The same days carried other international stories. On 24 November 2020, Russia said its navy had forced a United States destroyer to turn back in the Peter the Great Gulf, claiming the ship had crossed its territorial waters by two kilometres. The US navy said the destroyer had been conducting a freedom of navigation operation to challenge a Russian claim over the waters of a bay.
On 25 November 2020, the US Treasury announced unilateral sanctions on the al-Kaniyat militia and its leader, Mohamed al-Kani, after Russia blocked a UN Security Council attempt to blacklist the group.
For Ukrainian supporters, the lasting consequence of that week was the demotion to Division B.
