Ukraine's new education minister and a Libyan sanctions appeal
A look back at two reports from the days before 1 July 2020, one on Ukraine's education ministry and one on Libya's oilfield dispute.

What was in the news in the days leading up to 1 July 2020? For Ukraine, one item concerned the education ministry: on 25 June 2020, Serhiy Shkarlet was chosen as the country's education minister. He had earlier been caught plagiarising and was known for a fondness for expensive cars, as reported at the time.
Abroad, a separate report dated 27 June 2020 concerned Libya's civil war. The internationally recognised Government of National Accord called on the United States and the European Union to impose sanctions on individuals and what it called mercenaries. The appeal followed a statement by the National Oil Corporation that Russian mercenaries and other foreign actors had forced their way into the Sharara oilfield.
The two reports were unrelated, but both were part of the political picture as 1 July 2020 began.
