Ukraine's parliament opens the door to multiple citizenship

A law approved on 18 June 2025 sought to ease a demographic crisis caused by the Russian invasion.

What did Ukraine's parliament decide on 18 June 2025? It approved a law allowing multiple citizenship for Ukrainians, an attempt to ease a demographic crisis caused by the Russian invasion.

The vote came a day after a heavy Russian attack on the capital. On 17 June 2025, Russian forces launched a total of 440 drones and 32 missiles at Kyiv, damaging buildings and public facilities, killing 28 people and wounding dozens more.

On the same day, Russia's Ministry of Defence said its air defence units had intercepted and destroyed 147 Ukrainian drones overnight.

The citizenship law was thus approved against a backdrop of continuing strikes, with the war's toll on the country's population at the centre of the decision.
