What changed in Ukraine's public institutions by 21 March 2020?

A look back at two measures from mid-March 2020: a new school education law and a new Prosecutor General.

What had Ukraine's institutions seen in the days leading up to 21 March 2020? Two developments from the preceding week stood out, one in education and one in the justice system.

On 17 March 2020, the Verkhovna Rada agreed to a new Prosecutor General, and President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Iryna Venediktova to the post. The appointment combined parliamentary approval with a presidential decision.

On 18 March 2020, the law "On Complete General Secondary Education" took effect. By 21 March 2020, it had been in force for three days.

Together, the two events marked a week in which Ukraine's public institutions saw both a leadership appointment in the prosecution service and a new legal framework for secondary schooling.
