What did the days leading up to 11 January 2024 show about the war's reach? The reports from the preceding week point to sustained strikes on Ukraine, and to consequences felt well beyond its borders.

On 6 January 2024, local authorities said Russian forces attacked Pokrovsk Raion in Donetsk Oblast with S-300 missiles. At least 11 people were killed, including five children, and eight others were injured.

Two days later, on 8 January 2024, Russia launched a large missile and drone attack across Ukraine. At least four people were killed and 38 injured in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts. Ukraine said it had shot down all eight drones and 18 of the 51 missiles.

Effects abroad

The war's effects also reached other countries. On 5 January 2024, Nepal suspended the issuance of permits for its citizens to work in Russia and Ukraine, after 10 Nepalis were killed while serving in the Russian Army.

Inside Russia, authorities placed exiled tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky on a wanted list on 9 January 2024 over comments he had made about the war.

Taken together, these reports from the days before 11 January 2024 describe civilian casualties in several Ukrainian regions, a large-scale air attack and its partial interception, a foreign government restricting labour permits, and a legal move against a prominent Russian exile.
