What did 11 May 2022 show about the war's two fronts?

A look back at a day of missile strikes on Odesa and Ukrainian gains near Kharkiv, with regional unease reaching Moldova.

What was happening on the ground on 11 May 2022, and what did it say about the direction of the war? The reports from that day describe pressure in the south and progress in the north-east.

In the south, Russian forces continued to fire missiles at the port city of Odesa. The strikes were seen as an apparent attempt to cut supplies to the city.

In the north-east, the picture was different. Ukrainian military forces recaptured several settlements north of Kharkiv. As a result, Russian troops were driven back to less than a dozen miles from the Russian border. The gains formed part of the Battle of Kharkiv.

Unease beyond Ukraine's borders

The war's effects were also being felt outside Ukraine. Two days earlier, on 9 May 2022, Iranians in Moldova were urged to leave the country. The reason given was rising tensions in pro-Russian Transnistria and spillover effects from the war in Ukraine.

Taken together, the reports from 9 and 11 May 2022 show a conflict being fought along several lines at once: missile fire aimed at supply routes, a Ukrainian push to move Russian troops back toward the border, and a regional climate that led one country to warn its citizens in a neighbouring state.
