What did 16 October 2025 show about Ukraine's pressures?

A look back at a day of battlefield claims, evacuations, sanctions and a legal setback in Italy, as reported at the time.

What did the news of 16 October 2025 reveal about the pressures on Ukraine? The day's headline claim came from the south: Russian forces said they had crossed the Dnieper river and entered the city of Kherson for the first time since 2022. They also said they had captured Karantynnyy Island and Maly Vilkhovy Island in the city's southwest. The claim formed part of the Dnieper campaign, the series of clashes along the river in Kherson Oblast between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

Evacuations in the north-east

A day earlier, on 15 October 2025, Ukrainian authorities had ordered mass evacuations across 40 settlements and towns in northeastern Kharkiv Oblast. They cited the worsening situation around the city of Kupiansk. The order was a reminder of the humanitarian burden of the war, which includes the displacement and suffering of civilians.

Sanctions and a legal setback abroad

Also on 15 October 2025, the United Kingdom imposed new sanctions on the Russian energy companies Lukoil and Rosneft.

The same day, Italy's Supreme Court of Cassation blocked the extradition to Germany of a Ukrainian national suspected of causing the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream pipelines in 2022. Germany had sought him. The ruling touched on relations between Italy, Ukraine and Germany.

A domestic dispute in Odesa

On 14 October 2025, President Zelensky issued a decree stripping Odesa mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov of Ukrainian citizenship, amid accusations that he held Russian citizenship. The decree effectively removed him from office.

Taken together, the reports from 14 to 16 October 2025 showed a country dealing at once with military claims on the Dnieper, civilian evacuations in Kharkiv Oblast, a contested question of citizenship and office in Odesa, and a mix of support and setbacks abroad.
