What did 3 September 2025 show about Ukraine's pressures?
A retrospective on a night of mass Russian strikes, set against a week that also brought the killing of a former parliament speaker.

How much can a single week ask of a country's institutions? On 3 September 2025, Ukraine woke to the aftermath of another large overnight attack, arriving days after a political assassination and a deadly strike on its capital.
As reported at the time, Russia fired more than 500 drones and about two dozen missiles at Ukraine overnight into 3 September. The targets were mostly in western and central Ukraine, and at least five people were wounded. Poland responded by scrambling its fighter jets and placing ground-based air defences and radar systems on maximum readiness.
A week of strikes
The night fitted a pattern set earlier in the week. On 28 August, Russian forces launched nearly 600 drones and more than 30 ballistic and cruise missiles at Kyiv. The strikes hit several residential areas and killed 25 people, including four children, while wounding 63 others, among them 11 children.
The same day, the Ukrainian spy ship Simferopol was sunk by a drone strike on the Danube. Two people were killed, and several others were missing or injured.
A killing in Lviv
Public life was also shaken by a death that was not caused by the air war. On 30 August 2025, Andriy Parubiy, a sitting member of parliament and a former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, was shot dead in Lviv by an unknown gunman. A manhunt began for the suspect. The attack happened at around 10:35 am local time on Yefremov Street, and Parubiy was 54. By 1 September, a suspect had been arrested in Khmelnytskyi Oblast.
What the day showed
Taken together, the reports from those days describe two kinds of strain: sustained bombardment that reached across the country, and a targeted killing in a western city far from the front. The Polish response on 3 September also showed that the attacks on western and central Ukraine had an immediate effect beyond Ukraine's borders, as Warsaw raised the readiness of its own air defences.
For readers looking back, 3 September 2025 is best seen as one point in that sequence: a night of more than 500 drones and some two dozen missiles, following a week that had already brought mass civilian casualties in Kyiv and the loss of a prominent political figure.
