A look back at a day of civilian deaths in Kharkiv Oblast, a presidential interview on negotiations, and a report on the Azerbaijan Airlines crash.

What did the news of 4 February 2025 say about the state of the war? Looking back from today, reporting for that day, published on 5 February 2025 in many places, combined violence, diplomacy and an aviation inquiry. The Borderland Review revisits it here.

A strike on a residential building

On 4 February 2025, a Russian missile struck a residential building in Izium, Kharkiv Oblast. Four people were killed and twenty others were injured. The attack was recorded among Russian strikes on civilians in the Russo-Ukrainian War.

Talk of direct negotiations

The same day, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with the British journalist Piers Morgan that he was ready for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, if such a meeting was a setup to end the war. The remark placed the possibility of direct contact on the public record, even as the strike on Izium showed the war continuing.

The Azerbaijan Airlines question

A third report concerned Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243. On 4 February 2025, an Azerbaijani government source said the Embraer E190 had been shot down by Russia's Pantsir missile system.

The flight had been scheduled from Baku to Grozny. On 25 December 2024, the aircraft was severely damaged by a Russian surface-to-air missile on approach to Grozny. The pilots tried to divert, but the hydraulic system failed and control was lost. The plane crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan. Of the 67 people on board, 38 died and 29 survived with injuries.

A day in three parts

Taken together, the three reports from 4 February 2025 show a war that touched civilians in a Ukrainian town, a president speaking of talks with his Russian counterpart, and a disputed aviation disaster that drew a specific claim about the weapon involved.
