What did 4 November 2024 show about the war's widening edges?
A look back at a day of reports from Kursk Oblast, Donetsk Oblast and the Java Sea.

What did the news of 4 November 2024 reveal about the reach of the war in Ukraine? Three separate reports, from Kursk Oblast, Donetsk Oblast and the Java Sea, pointed in different directions.
The most striking came from Kursk Oblast in Russia, where Ukraine said that its forces had engaged North Korean troops for the first time. The claim placed a third country's soldiers on the ground in the 2024 Kursk offensive.
The Donetsk front
In the east, the fighting continued on a different scale. On 3 November 2024, the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Ukrainian military news site DeepStateUA both reported that Russia had captured the settlement of Vyshneve in Donetsk Oblast. Russian troops were reported to be advancing towards Hryhorivka, to the west.
Vyshneve belonged to the Pokrovsk offensive, a Russian operation whose main goal was to capture the cities of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad in western Donetsk Oblast. That push had gathered pace after Russian forces captured Prohres on 18 and 19 July 2024, a turning point for the offensive northwest of Avdiivka, which Russia had taken in February 2024. Fighting had by then spread across numerous settlements east and south of Pokrovsk. The wider theatre in Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv regions had been active since the start of the war in February 2022.
A distant exercise
Far from either front, the Indonesian Navy and the Russian Navy began their first ever joint military exercise on 4 November 2024, in the Java Sea. It was a reminder that Russia's military relationships were being pursued well beyond Europe.
Taken together, the reports from that date show a conflict being fought along several lines at once: a cross-border operation in Kursk Oblast, a grinding advance in Donetsk Oblast, and naval cooperation in Southeast Asian waters. For Kyiv, the first of these carried the clearest new element, with North Korean troops reported in combat.
