What did 9 June 2022 show about borders and pressure?
A look back at a day when Poland moved to end its border emergency, days after fresh US sanctions and a change of leadership in Donetsk.

What was happening on the edges of the war in Europe on 9 June 2022? The reports from that day and the days just before it point to three separate developments, each shaping the political map in its own way.
On 9 June 2022, Poland decided to lift its state of emergency over attempts by migrants to cross the Belarus–Poland border. Warsaw said the border barrier it had been building was mostly complete. The decision closed a chapter in the 2021–2022 Belarus–European Union border crisis, at least as far as the emergency measures were concerned.
The financial front had moved two days earlier. On 7 June 2022, the United States Department of the Treasury banned all trading of Russian debt and stocks, including on the secondary market. The step was part of the international sanctions imposed during the Russo-Ukrainian War.
In the occupied east, the so-called Donetsk People's Republic changed its leadership on 8 June 2022. Vitaliy Khotsenko was sworn in as its new prime minister, following the dimission of Alexander Ananchenko.
Taken together, the three items show a day when governments were adjusting their tools: a border state declaring its barrier largely finished, a major economy tightening restrictions on Russian securities, and a self-proclaimed administration reshuffling its top post.
