A look back at the days around 9 May 2022, when the war's effects were felt from Luhansk Oblast to Moldova and Nigeria.

What did the war look like in the days around 9 May 2022? Reports from 7 to 9 May described a conflict whose effects stretched well beyond the front line, from besieged Mariupol to neighbouring Moldova and to airports in Nigeria.

Strikes and evacuations

On 7 May 2022, Russian forces bombed a school in Bilohorivka, in Sievierodonetsk Raion, Luhansk Oblast. Only two deaths were confirmed at first, but sixty people were believed to have been killed. The attack took place during the Battle of Sievierodonetsk, and authorities said the actual toll was close to 60.

The same day, four Russian missiles struck the port city of Odesa. Ukraine also said that all women, children and elderly people had been evacuated from the besieged Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol.

Diplomacy in Kyiv

On 8 May 2022, Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, made an unannounced visit to Kyiv, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly. They met President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy while the Russian invasion continued.

Spillover abroad

The consequences were also visible far from the battlefield. On 7 May, the Airline Operators of Nigeria announced that all its airlines would suspend domestic flights from the following Monday, 9 May, in protest at rising fuel prices caused by the war in Ukraine.

On 9 May 2022, Iranians in Moldova were urged to leave the country because of rising tensions in pro-Russian Transnistria and spillover effects from the war in Ukraine.

A wider picture

Taken together, these reports show a war that was killing civilians in Luhansk Oblast, striking Black Sea ports, and drawing senior foreign visitors to the capital. It was also pushing up fuel costs in Africa and unsettling a neighbouring state. For readers following Ukraine's government and public life, the period showed how closely domestic resilience and international attention were linked.
