What did a court ruling on Ukrainian spelling settle in May 2021?
A look back at an appeals court decision on the new orthography, reported days before 14 May 2021.

What did the courts decide about how Ukrainian is written? By 14 May 2021, the answer had been reported for three days: on 11 May 2021, the Appeals Administrative Court upheld the validity of the new edition of the Ukrainian orthography.
The ruling kept the new edition of the spelling rules in force. The reports of the time did not set out further details of the case, and this retrospective does not add any.
For a review of public institutions, the episode shows a court being asked to rule on a rulebook for the national language. The decision meant the new edition remained in effect.

The same week, on 10 May 2021, sources in Russia's defence industry reported that Russia would carry out three tests of the RS-28 Sarmat hypersonic ICBM in the third quarter of 2021. The tests were to take place at the Kura Missile Test Range in Kamchatka Krai as part of flight design tests. Two were expected to probe the missile's maximum capabilities, with a specified range of 18,000 km and speeds of around Mach 20. Deployment with the armed forces was expected in 2022.
