What did Kyiv face as an Alaska summit loomed?

A look back at 12 August 2025, three days before the announced meeting between the presidents of the United States and Russia.

What did the run-up to a Russia–United States summit mean for Ukraine on 12 August 2025? The date fell between an announcement and a meeting, with the outcome still unknown.

Two days earlier, on 10 August 2025, U.S. president Donald Trump announced that he would meet Russian president Vladimir Putin in Alaska on 15 August. The stated purpose was to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. By 12 August, the meeting was therefore fixed in the diary, and its agenda concerned a war in which Ukraine was the country most directly affected.

That is the opinion-worthy point of the day: a decision about Ukraine's future was being prepared in a format that, according to the announcement, involved the two leaders of Washington and Moscow.

What followed

The summit took place on 15 August 2025 at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. It ended without an agreement being announced. Trump later suggested that, in his view, the onus was now on Ukraine to cede territory in order to end the war.

Seen from 12 August, none of that was settled. What was clear was the timetable and the topic: talks on ending the war, set for 15 August, with Ukraine's interests at stake in a room it had not been announced as entering.
