A look back at a court ruling on PrivatBank and a security claim, days before Ukraine's presidential election.

What was happening in Ukraine's public life in the days around 18 April 2019, just ahead of the presidential election on 21 April? Two reports from 17 April offer a glimpse.

On 17 April, the District Administrative Court of Kyiv cancelled the nationalisation of PrivatBank. The ruling concerned the nationalisation of the bank, and it became part of the public debate in the final days before the vote.

On the same day, the Security Service of Ukraine said it had captured a Russian military intelligence hit squad. According to the service, the group was responsible for the attempted murder of a Ukrainian military spy. The claim was made in the run-up to the 21 April election.

Taken together, the two reports showed a court decision on a financial institution and a security-service announcement arriving within the same day. The reports do not link the two, and this retrospective draws no connection between them. What they do record is the news that reached the public on 17 April, as 18 April 2019 began.
