What did Kyiv's F-16 news and Fico's diesel threat signal?

A look back at two developments in the days around 5 August 2024, involving military aid and an energy dispute with Slovakia.

What was Ukraine's position on 5 August 2024, as new military hardware arrived and a neighbour threatened its fuel supplies? Two reports from the preceding days framed the moment.

On 4 August 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine had received its first F-16 fighter aircraft from NATO allies. The announcement was part of the wider flow of military aid to Ukraine during the Russo-Ukrainian War.

A few days earlier, on 31 July 2024, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico had threatened to suspend Slovakia's diesel exports to Ukraine. The condition he set was that the Ukrainian government continue to suspend pipeline oil transport from the Russian oil company Lukoil. Slovakia claimed the suspension was causing a national energy crisis.

Taken together, the reports showed Ukraine receiving aircraft from allies while facing pressure over fuel from a neighbouring government. Both stories were still open on 5 August 2024.
