What did Moldova and Ukraine decide on EU alignment and the CIS?

A look back at two developments reported on 1 and 2 April 2026, one in Chisinau's parliament and one in Ukraine's cabinet.

What was decided in the days around 3 April 2026? Two reports from just before that date show how two neighbours were handling their ties with Russia and the European Union.

On 2 April 2026, Moldova's parliament approved the country's withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States. The government said the organisation's core values and principles, such as territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders, were no longer respected. It pointed to Russia's actions in the region, including the war against Ukraine and the illegal military presence on Moldovan territory. The decision was also reported in the context of Moldova's accession to the European Union.

On 1 April 2026, Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers approved the National Programme for the Adaptation of Ukrainian Legislation to European Union law, known as the EU acquis. The programme contains about 1,850 tasks, which provide for implementing more than 1,600 acts of EU law.

Taken together, the reports describe one step of political separation from a Russia-led grouping and one of detailed legal preparation for closer integration with the EU.
