What did Parubiy's killing mean for Ukraine's politics?
A look back at 1 September 2025, two days after the shooting of a sitting MP and former parliamentary speaker in Lviv.

What was known on 1 September 2025 about the killing of Andriy Parubiy? Two days earlier, on 30 August 2025, the sitting member of parliament and former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada had been shot dead in Lviv. He was 54.
The attack took place at around 10:35 am on Yefremov Street. As reported at the time, the gunman was unknown and a manhunt was underway in the first hours after the shooting.
By 1 September, a suspect had been arrested in Khmelnytskyi Oblast. That arrest moved the case from a search for an unidentified attacker to the stage of a detained suspect.
The killing of a serving lawmaker who had previously led the parliament was a grave event for Ukrainian public life. It also placed particular weight on the work of law enforcement in the days that followed, since a swift and credible account of who carried out the attack, and how, mattered to public confidence.
As of 1 September 2025, those questions were still open. Only the basic outline was established: the place, the approximate time, the victim and the detention of a suspect in another region.
