What did the 8 May 2024 strikes reveal about Ukraine's security?

A look back at a day of missile attacks, a reported plot against the president and cross-border pressure.

What did a single day of war say about the pressures on Ukraine's state? On 8 May 2024, Russia launched missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, injuring three people and damaging critical infrastructure. Ukraine said it shot down 39 of 55 missiles and 20 of 21 drones.

A plot reported a day earlier

The attacks came after an announcement on 7 May 2024 by the Security Service of Ukraine. It said it had detained two colonels from the government protection unit who had been recruited by Russia's Federal Security Service. According to the service, they were planning to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other top Ukrainian officials.

The case concerned the very unit responsible for guarding the country's leadership. Later accounts, based on Ukrainian government officials and news sources, said Zelenskyy had survived dozens of assassination and kidnapping attempts by Russian or pro-Russian agents during the war, including at least three foiled by Ukrainian security services.

Fire on both sides of the border

The fighting also reached targets beyond the front line. On 7 May 2024, Ukrainian forces launched a missile strike on an oil terminal in Luhansk, causing a large fire and injuring at least five workers. On 6 May 2024, Ukrainian drone attacks in Belgorod Oblast, Russia, killed six people and injured 35 others.

Pressure beyond the battlefield

Moscow's moves on 7 May 2024 extended beyond military action. Russia declared the American nonprofit Freedom House an undesirable organisation, effectively outlawing it, after accusing it of discrediting the Russian army and advocating sanctions against Russia.

The war's reach also extended to people far from Ukraine. On 8 May 2024, India's Central Bureau of Investigation arrested four people linked to a network of human traffickers. The network was said to have lured young men to Russia with promises of jobs or university admission and then forced them to fight in the war in Ukraine. India's Ministry of External Affairs was working with Russia to secure discharges for 20 Indian nationals in the Russian army.

A day in context

Taken together, the reports from 6 to 8 May 2024 show a war fought through missiles and drones, but also through infiltration of security structures, restrictions on foreign organisations and the recruitment of foreign nationals. For Ukraine's institutions, the day brought a test of air defence and of internal security at once.
